Alexander Zverev credited Carlos Alcaraz's tips for defeating Daniil Medvedev to reach the quarter-finals at the Cincinnati Open.
On Thursday, Zverev beat World No. 3 Medvedev 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 34 minutes.
Speaking after the victory, Zverev said Alcaraz's tips helped him a lot during his match against Medvedev.
"I played golf with Carlos Alcaraz last week in Toronto. He gave me a very good game plan against him actually," Zverev said while laughing. "I asked him a few questions, and they were quite helpful. Ya, at the end of the day, I did what I had to do, I fought it out and sitting here as a winner," he added.
Zverev earned his first Top 10 win of the season and snapped a four-match losing streak against Medvedev.
In windy conditions, the German found consistency in the key moments and showed great desire. He saved both break points he faced at 4-4, before he broke Medvedev’s serve in the next game. Zverev has now won his past eight matches in Cincinnati, having triumphed at the hard-court tournament in his previous appearance in 2021.
He will now meet Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-final tomorrow.
